What’s up girls? Today we are looking at the best curling irons for short hair. We looked at 100’s of reviews from Amazon, Ulta, Target, and Sally Beauty, watched over 20 video reviews, and talked to 11 women who own these curling irons to come up with our recommendations. Our research has led us to think that the BaBylissPRO Conicurl is going to be the choice for most women with short hair.

For the most part, all of the leading curling irons are going to do a similar job on your hair. The important differences are the material the barrel is made out of, the ability to control temperature, ease of use, and bonus points for how cute it is. 😉

BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Conicurl Iron

The Best Curling Iron For Short Hair

We picked the BaBylissPRO Titanium Conicurl as our favorite curling iron for short hair. BaBylissPRO is a well known and trusted brand. This curling iron has a ceramic coated barrel which help with even heat distribution, 50 heat settings to dial in to our target temperature of 350F-390F, the price point is perfect for most people and everyone we talked to really liked the one they own.

There are two things we wish were improved. First, if the barrel was ceramic instead of ceramic coated, it would distribute heat even more evenly and increase the life of the curling iron. Second, at five feet, the cord is on the short side.

Pros

  • Tapered barrel for flexible styling
  • Well known reputable brand with a great warranty
  • Lots of heat settings

Cons

  • Ceramic coating on the titanium barrel will wear off over time
  • Short cord length

Our Upgrade Pick

Drybar The 3-Day Bender 1″ Barrel Digital Curling Iron

Our upgrade pick, Drybar The 3-Day Bender comes from the company that essentially invented the dry bar blowout concept. You can call them style icons.

The main reason we picked The 3-Day bender as our upgrade pick is because it addresses our two main concerns with the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Conicurl. It has a very long, 9-foot cord, which is great for home or professional use. It also uses a double ceramic barrel which give it incredibly even heat distribution to help avoid burning or damaging your hair.

The other thing we love about The 3-Day Bender is the digital temperature control which allows you to more precisely set the exact temperature you want.

Pros

  • Rotating clamp for easy curling
  • Dual ceramic heating plates for even heat distribution
  • Digital temperature control gives lots of heat options

Cons

  • Yellow design is attractive but not for everyone

The Rest of the Competition

HOT Tools 24K Gold Curling Iron

The HOT Tools 24K Gold Curling Iron is another good budget option. You get a lot of features for your money; 8-foot long cord, auto shut-off, and a safety stand. That being said, for only a small amount more, you can get the BaByliss Conicurl which is ceramic coated instead of 24K gold plated. It’s a small price to pay for a big improvement in even heat distribution.

If you can’t find the Conicurl, or just prefer Helen of Troy products, this is a good alternative.

Pros

  • Very affordable for the feature set
  • Attractive black and gold design
  • Heats up quickly

Cons

  • It gets much hotter than is safe for hair
  • Reviews are inconsistent in regards to quality of materials

NuMe Classic Curling Wand Pearl

The NuMe Classic is another great curling wand that we looked at. It has a very unique design which looks might like it belongs in your nightstand than your bathroom. Everyone we talked to really liked how well this curling wand curls their hair.

It is 100% Tourmaline Ceramic which makes it one of the best barrel materials that we looked at and has a huge feature set including a long 7-foot swivel cord and its tourmaline ceramic barrel.

The only reason we didn’t pick the NuMe as our favorite is because of the high number of reviews that we read saying that the shape of this curling iron makes it slide or roll of your counter very easily. Many, many people complained of this happening, breaking the curling wand.

Pros

  • Lots of temperature control options to prevent burning
  • Long Cord
  • The tourmaline ceramic barrel creates a friction-free surface to reduce breakage and evenly conduct heat

Cons

  • Design makes it easy for it to roll off of a counter
  • You need to use a heat glove to prevent burning your hand

Foxybae Wanderlust 25mm curling wand

From a purely aesthetic opinion, the Foxybae Wanderlust is my favorite curling wand. It is sooooo cute. Foxybae really knows how to appeal to my sense of style, I love the rose gold and black design and the packaging is first class.

The Wanderlust even has a great feature set. It has digital temperature control for precise temperature setting, a very long 9-foot swivel cord, and it includes a heat resistant glove.

There a few reasons the Foxybae didn’t top our list. They have an affiliate program so it is hard to trust the Youtube videos and bloggers who talk about how great it is because they might be incentivized to say so. In addition to that, it has a titanium barrel, which isn’t great for heat distribution and should be at least ceramic coated at this price.

Finally, they are a newer company so it’s hard to know what the long term durability is. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal if they had a longer warranty but it is only 6-months.

Pros

  • Heats up quickly and has adjustable heat settings
  • Very attractive packaging and wand
  • Swivel cord helps prevent getting tangled up

Cons

  • You need to use a heat glove to prevent burning your hand

How do you curl short hair?

Now that you know what curling iron to buy, you might be wondering how to curl your hair. Or if you’re like me, you might be saying “I already know how to curl my hair but why don’t you show me anyway, to show my friend ;)”.

As I have discussed many times on this site, the first two steps are easy. First, make sure you are starting with dry hair. Contrary to popular belief, damp or wet hair will actually increase the likelihood of you overheating and damaging your hair.

Second, make sure you use a heat protectant. I personally like the MOROCCANOIL Perfect Defense spray but you can use whatever brand you like.

How to curl short hair with a curling iron

  1. Choose the right tool – All of the curling irons I recommended have a 1” barrel. That’s because if you have short hair, anything larger than that will be too big and anything smaller than that will give you super tight ringlets and I assume that you don’t want super tight ringlets.
  2. Clip up your hair – To make sure you are curling all of your hair, use a hair clip or tie to put the top layer of your hair up. Curl the bottom first then the top. If your hair is really short, you may be able to skip this step as you don’t really have much hair to clip up.
  3. Wrap your hair around the curling iron – Starting from one side and working your way around, curl your hair around the curling iron away from your face. Start about ½” from your roots and avoid curling the ends.
  4. Avoid heat damage – Some curling irons can get over 450F which is way too hot for your hair. To avoid damage, you should be working in the 350F-390F range and hold no longer than 10 seconds. Less is more if you want to protect your hair.
  5. Catch your hair – Release your hair from your curling iron into your hand and support it for about 3 seconds while it cools. This will help your hair retain the curl.
  6. Repeat with the top layer – Repeat steps 3-6 with the top layer of your hair.
  7. Chill out – Let your hair cool for a few minutes then tousle it until you like how it looks.
  8. Set it and forget it – Set your cute, curly look with a small amount of your favorite hairspray. I like Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray but as always, use your favorite brand.

How to curl short hair with a curling wand

Honestly, the instructions for using a curling wand are exactly the same as using a curling iron. You just need to be a little more careful to avoid burning yourself. Most curling wands come with a heat glove, so use that if you are risk averse. If your wand didn’t come with one or you lose yours, you can pick up this heat glove on Amazon for under $10.

Final Thoughts

There are a lot of great curling irons and curling wands available today – A LOT. From my research, I think that the BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Conicurl is going to be the best option for most women with short hair. The barrel is tapered, it has lots of heat settings, it’s easy and comfortable to use and you can trust the manufacturer.

If you are looking for something a little nicer, I recommend going with the Drybar The 3-Day Bender as it has a better barrel, longer cord, and digital temperature control.

Let me know what curling iron you have and what you love or hate about it in the comments.
